Train The Trainers: Oldtime Strength

Somaiya Sports Academy recently concluded a two day training workshop for Coaches that consisted of Gada and Mudgar utilization in sports performance. Guided by none other than the Somaiya family's Mr. Yashesh Shethia, coaches understood how to use the tools to build strength and endurance that once forged endurance among warriors for battle.

Indian strength training implements are often lost to history as we have now embraced the globally used barbells, dumbbells, and machines. However, this workshop was an eye opener to several Coaches who learnt about rotational strength, mobility, and power transfer. The latter being something new and significant, as power transfer often varies from sport-to-sport and may not be the same for everyone. Pehelwans, archers, wrestlers, and other oldtime athletes have often used makeshift implements as opposed to the cookie cutter weights we have today, that offer a balanced method of training and building vanity.

However, grounding us back to Earth with some humble, indigenous implements and some insightful training was Mr. Yashesh Shethia, who has practiced these movements for years now and concluded the workshop with the vision of having Somaiya Sports Academy do what it does best. Develop grassroot sports and athletes with a tinge of forgotten strength secrets through Gada and Mudgars.
